Vierchni Castle

Vierchni Castle is a fortress in Polotsk with five towers connected by thick defensive walls positioned on elevated ground near the Dvina River. The preserved structure includes various sections that were originally designed for military defense and as living quarters for important residents.

The fortress was built in the late 1400s and served as an important defensive position against external raids while housing local leaders. Its construction coincided with a period when the region strengthened its defensive network with multiple similar structures.

The castle takes its name from its medieval fortification purpose and displays rooms from different periods with their distinctive architectural features. The exhibitions visible today tell the story of how people once lived and worked within these walls.

The grounds can be explored on foot, with pathways around the towers and walls accessible to visitors. Informational signs are placed throughout the property to help explain the layout and proportions of the structure.

The castle grounds feature a restored landscape park that creates a green resting area among the historic stones. The site also operates a restaurant serving dishes based on recipes from different historical periods.
