Torrelavega, Industrial municipality in Cantabria, Spain
Torrelavega is an industrial municipality in Cantabria, Spain, located at the confluence of the Besaya and Saja rivers, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southwest of Santander. The second largest city in the region spreads across a wide valley where residential neighborhoods sit alongside factories and commercial zones.
The settlement started in the 14th century when Garci Lasso de la Vega I built a castle to manage territorial taxes and privileges. Over the centuries, the town grew into a center for livestock trading and later for industry.
Every August, residents and visitors gather for the Fiestas de la Virgen Grande, a celebration when decorated floats parade through the streets. The Floral Gala marks the highlight of these festivities honoring the town's patron saint.
The town sits on major transport routes and connects northern Spain's industrial centers through rail and road networks. Travelers find connections here to Santander and other parts of Cantabria.
The National Livestock Market of Torrelavega remains one of the most important cattle trading centers in Spain. For generations, breeders and traders have gathered here to exchange livestock from across Cantabria and beyond.
