Cave of Altacosa, Prehistoric cave in Santillana del Mar, Spain

The Cave of Altamira stretches 270 meters in length with passages and chambers whose limestone walls and ceilings carry numerous polychrome animal depictions. A precise replica in the adjoining museum allows visitors to examine the paintings up close without endangering the original.

A hunter discovered the cave in 1868, leading to archaeological excavations that unearthed artifacts and artwork spanning 36,000 to 13,000 years ago. The discovery fundamentally changed the scientific understanding of prehistoric human capabilities.

School groups and researchers come here to understand how early humans perceived their world through art. The museum displays replicated tools and pigments that give visitors a tangible sense of prehistoric painting techniques.

Visitors can explore a precise replica of the cave at the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira, as access to the original remains restricted. The museum sits a few minutes' walk from the town center and offers accessible pathways through the exhibition spaces.

The prehistoric artists incorporated natural rock formations into their compositions, creating three-dimensional effects in their animal depictions. Some bison images follow the bulges in the cave ceiling, so the animals appear to come alive in torchlight.

You can walk along the coast where cliffs drop sharply into the sea, then turn inland to find valleys full of green grass and small villages built from local stone. Port towns sit beside the water, their harbors filled with fishing boats....
