Valencia de Don Juan

Valencia de Don Juan is a municipality in León Province with a medieval castle as its focal point. The castle sits on a hill overlooking the Esla River valley and displays Gothic architectural features with prominent tower structures.

The settlement was originally called Coyanza and changed its name in the 13th century to Valencia de Campos. Later, Infante John of Portugal renamed it, giving it the name it carries today.

The town carries traces of its medieval roots in the way its old streets are arranged and how people use the castle grounds. The layout of the settlement reflects centuries of habitation and local traditions.

Visitors who wish to enter the castle must obtain permission from the Town Council beforehand. Guided tours are available during certain seasonal hours.

A council meeting took place here in 1050 that was important for medieval governance in the Kingdom of León. This event shows that the settlement once served as a significant administrative center.
