Chinchilla de Montearagón, Medieval fortified town in Albacete, Spain

Chinchilla de Montearagón is a town in Albacete Province built on elevated ground, with narrow winding streets that climb around a central hill. The settlement spreads across multiple districts and is crowned by a fortress that overlooks the surrounding landscape.

The settlement was fortified early on, with the castle dating to the early Middle Ages when the region was under constant control. The fortress later gained importance as a holding place for notable prisoners and shaped the area's development over time.

The town developed as a center for ceramic craftsmanship, and this heritage remains visible in local traditions and workshops. The museums here display works that reveal how important this craft has been to the community over centuries.

The best way to explore the old quarter is on foot through the narrow streets, as vehicles are difficult to navigate in the historical areas. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since the town sits on hills and the paths can be steep.

Beneath the town lie remains of an Iberian culture from thousands of years before the fortress was built. A burial monument from this period was uncovered and reveals that the hill had been a place of importance for a very long time.
