Iniesta, municipality in Cuenca, Spain
Iniesta is a small municipality in Cuenca Province, in the Castile-La Mancha region of central Spain. The village center sits around a main square, set within the open, gently rolling plateau that defines much of this part of the country.
The settlement has old roots and took shape over many centuries as a farming village on the Castilian plateau. During the 20th century, like many rural communities in this part of Spain, it saw much of its population move to larger cities.
Iniesta is widely known as the birthplace of footballer Andrés Iniesta, and the town honors him with a small monument and references throughout the streets. His name appears on signs and local shops, making football a visible part of everyday life here.
The village is very small and offers only basic services, so it is worth checking in advance what is available before arriving. Getting there by car is the most practical option, as public transport connections in this part of Cuenca Province are limited.
Andrés Iniesta, born here in 1984, scored the goal in extra time that gave Spain its first World Cup title in 2010. That single moment made this remote village a destination for football fans who travel here just to see where he grew up.
