Altamira towers

Altamira towers are remnants of a medieval castle on a hilltop near Brión, featuring thick stone walls designed for defense. The structure displays modifications made over time to strengthen its ability to withstand attacks.

The fortress traces its origins to the 9th century but underwent major reconstruction in the mid-15th century with reinforced walls. This renovation reflected changing military tactics and the need to defend against more advanced weaponry.

The towers were once home to the Moscoso family, who ruled as Counts of Altamira and shaped medieval Galician politics. Visitors can see how this stronghold reflected the power and status of the nobility in the region.

The site is accessible via a walking path that lets visitors explore the ruins and surrounding grounds. Wear sturdy shoes and watch the weather, as the hilltop location exposes the area to wind and occasional rain.

The Provincial Council of A Coruña took over the towers in 1973 and started preservation work. Since then, the site remains an example of regional efforts to protect medieval structures for future generations.
