Ribadavia

Ribadavia is a municipality in southwestern Ourense that stretches along the right bank of the Miño River and the lower course of the Avia River. The town contains medieval architecture and historic structures spread across several neighborhoods.

The municipality developed as an important commercial center in the Middle Ages, particularly for wine production and European exports. This economic power shaped the region's development and reputation over centuries.

The Jewish Quarter displays buildings from different periods, including the synagogue and traditional houses around Plaza de Magdalena, reflecting the daily life of the former community.

The place is easily reached via the N-120 road and the A-52 Rias Baixas highway, located about 25 kilometers from Ourense. Visitors should be prepared to explore the medieval neighborhoods on foot, as many streets are narrow and cobbled.

The 15th-century Castle of Sarmiento preserves its interior rooms, defensive towers, and original stone walls, creating a rare example of medieval fortified architecture. This well-preserved complex provides a rare glimpse into the defensive structures that protected the region.
