The airport opened in April 1970 following years of planning that began in the 1950s to replace the older Buenavista Airport. That earlier facility struggled with operational difficulties because of challenging weather conditions.

The airport provides transportation through marked bus routes, regulated taxi services, and car rental agencies for reaching different parts of the island. Getting to the island's center takes about 30 minutes and can be easily arranged on arrival.
