Cartoixa d'Escala Dei

Cartoixa d'Escala Dei is a Carthusian monastery complex with buildings spanning multiple centuries in La Morera de Montsant, Catalonia. The ruins display Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical features across several cloisters, a church, and a refectory.

The monastery was founded in 1194 by French monks from Provence, marking the first Carthusian settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. It became an important center for developing and settling the mountainous landscapes of the region.

The monks developed agricultural methods and planted vineyards on steep slate hillsides, laying the groundwork for what became the Priorat wine region today.

The site is accessible on foot with marked paths and information panels positioned throughout the ruins. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and some areas include steep steps.

A reconstructed monk's cell displays stone basins used by the apothecary monk, offering insight into daily tasks within the community. This recreation helps visitors understand the practical routines that structured monastic life.
