Cartoixa d'Escala Dei

The monastery complex exhibits architectural elements from Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical periods across three cloisters, a church, and a refectory.

Founded in 1194 by French monks from Provence, this monastery marked the establishment of the first Carthusian foundation on the Iberian Peninsula.

The monks developed agricultural practices and introduced vineyard cultivation on steep slate slopes, establishing the foundation for the current Priorat wine region.

Visitors can explore the monastery ruins from Tuesday to Sunday, with seasonal opening hours ranging from 10:00 to 20:00 and standard admission costing 5 euros.

The site contains a reconstructed monastic cell featuring stone basins used by the apothecary monk, demonstrating the daily activities of Carthusian religious life.
