Ascó Nuclear Power Plant, nuclear power plant
Ascó Nuclear Power Plant is a large electricity-generating facility located near the town of Ascó in Spain. It contains two reactors that operate continuously to produce power for thousands of homes and businesses in the region.
The plant was approved in the mid-1970s, with construction beginning for the first reactor in 1974 and the second in 1975. The first reactor connected to the electrical grid in 1983, followed by the second in 1985, and has been generating electricity ever since.
The facility is named after the nearby town of Ascó and forms part of the local identity. It has become integrated into the region's daily life by sponsoring cultural and sports events in the community.
The site is surrounded by a security perimeter, but a visitor center allows the public to learn about nuclear energy. The information center features interactive displays and virtual tours that help explain how the plant operates.
The ANAV visitor center opened in 2011 and offers around 30 interactive panels across 1000 square meters (10,800 square feet) that explain energy concepts in simple terms. The site is also home to video series featuring nuclear engineers who use clear explanations to dispel myths about nuclear power.
