Serra del Montsec, Limestone mountain range in Lleida, Spain
The Serra del Montsec extends 40 kilometers from east to west, featuring three distinct massifs separated by the Noguera Pallaresa and Noguera Ribagorça rivers.
The region contains fossils from 140 million years ago when the area was a marine basin, documenting the presence of plants and dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period.
The strategic position of Serra del Montsec played a crucial role during the Reconquista, with numerous castles and watchtowers built to defend against Christian advances.
The mountain range offers marked trails for hiking, climbing locations in limestone formations, and an astronomical observatory near the town of Àger.
The Montsec geological formations include two major gorges, Terradets and Mont Rebei, created by river erosion through the limestone mountains.
