Els Muntanyans, Coastal nature reserve in Torredembarra and Creixell, Spain
Els Muntanyans is a protected natural area that stretches 2160 meters along the Mediterranean coast between Torredembarra and Creixell. The site preserves a complex mix of sand dunes and wetland habitats that stand out sharply from the built areas around it.
The site was recognized in 2001 by the Government's coastal authority as a key biological corridor linking different protected coastal areas together. This official designation protected the land from development and overuse.
The Environmental Activity Centre Cal Bofill runs programs here that help visitors learn about the plants and animals of the Mediterranean coast. People come to develop a direct connection with how these coastal systems actually work.
The site is easily reachable on foot from Torredembarra railway station and has marked paths running through the different habitats. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground can be wet and sandy in places.
This area represents the last remaining natural beach ecosystem preserved between two large delta systems on the Catalan coast. This rare position makes it an important refuge for migratory bird species and other mobile animals.
