El Barraco, municipality of Spain
El Barraco is a municipality in the Province of Ávila, in the Castilla y León region of central Spain. The town sits in the Alberche river valley, surrounded by pine forests and hills, with the Sierra de Gredos visible to the south.
El Barraco grew during the Reconquest, when the surrounding area was gradually resettled and small villages formed across the valley. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the town hall both date from the 1500s and still stand in the town center.
El Barraco has a strong heritage of leather craftsmanship and livestock farming that shapes the town's identity and daily work. Visitors can still see small workshops and shops dedicated to leather goods, reflecting the skills passed down through generations in the community.
El Barraco lies on the N-403 road between Ávila and Toledo, so it is easy to reach by car from either direction. The area around the town offers walking trails and access to the Embalse del Burguillo reservoir, which draws visitors in warmer months.
A stone bridge from the 1500s, once known as the Puente del Burguillo, now lies under the water of the reservoir and can occasionally become visible when water levels drop. The dam built in the mid-20th century flooded it, but the structure is still there beneath the surface.
