Puente de Itero, Medieval bridge in Melgar de Yuso, Spain
The Puente de Itero spans the Pisuerga river with seven arch openings made from dressed stone blocks. The structure connects Palencia and Burgos provinces and serves as a roadway, bicycle path, and pedestrian crossing for all types of travelers.
In the 12th century King Alfonso VI ordered construction of this bridge near a hospital dedicated to Saint John. The structure enabled both regional commerce and pilgrim traffic through the area at that time.
The bridge serves as a key waypoint on the pilgrimage route and connects two small settlements in the flat landscape of Tierra de Campos. Visitors notice how many people pass through here on foot and by bicycle, especially pilgrims following their journey.
The crossing is open year-round and easy to traverse on foot or by bicycle. The surroundings are flat and open, so approach from any direction is straightforward.
Next to the bridge stands the hermitage of San Nicolas with Romanesque and Gothic elements. This small shrine displays a blend of medieval building styles that visitors often overlook.
