Cabarceno Natural Park, Wildlife park in Cantabria, Spain
Cabarceno Natural Park is a wildlife reserve in Cantabria, Spain, where more than 120 species from five continents live across 750 hectares of former mining land reshaped into open enclosures. The site follows a network of 20 kilometers of roads connecting different zones where animals move through large territories.
The site operated as an iron ore quarry until the 1980s, when it was converted into a nature reserve in 1989. The transformation preserved the rock formations and terrain while creating habitats for animals from different continents.
Local families visit on weekends to watch animals from around the world without leaving the region. School groups from nearby towns arrive regularly to observe how creatures behave when given space to move and interact naturally.
Visitors drive their own vehicles through the grounds and stop at marked viewpoints to watch the animals. Walking trails lead through botanical sections, and picnic tables are available at several spots along the route.
The steep rock walls and limestone formations left from mining days create natural barriers and viewing points within the enclosures. This terrain allows visitors to observe animals from above as they move through the valleys below.
