Roman Walls of Lugo, Roman defensive walls in Lugo, Spain
The ancient fortifications stretch 2.1 kilometers around the old town with 85 towers and ten gates controlling access to the city center.
Romans constructed these protective walls between 263 and 276 AD to shield Lucus Augusti from Germanic invasions and local tribal conflicts.
The walls earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000 and represent the most complete Roman military architecture remaining in Western Europe.
Visitors access the walkway atop the walls through multiple entry points, offering a complete circuit path with views over both city and countryside.
The structure maintains its original height of up to 12 meters and incorporates granite and slate stones with a core mixture of earth and gravel.
