Iglesia de San Pedro, Gothic parish church in Lugo, Spain

Iglesia de San Pedro is a Gothic parish church located within Lugo's Roman walls, built from granite and stone work characteristic of medieval construction. The building displays a Latin cross layout with a four-sided roof over the transept, supported by wooden structures and four toral arches that distribute the weight across the interior.

The church originated as part of a Franciscan monastery established in 1214 during the pilgrimage of Saint Francis of Assisi, according to local records. This connection to the early Franciscan movement shaped both the spiritual direction and architectural development of the site throughout the following centuries.

The interior reflects Gothic traditions through its vaulted ceilings and carved stone elements that have served the local faith community for centuries. Visitors can observe how the spatial design accommodates religious processions and gatherings in the nave and side aisles.

The church is located directly within Lugo's well-preserved Roman walls in the old town, making it easily accessible on foot. The main entrance features large granite blocks with a generous window above that fills the interior with natural light during the day.

During restoration work in the 1970s, workers discovered a hexagonal crypt beneath the building that once served as a temporary resting place for the deceased. This hidden chamber offers insight into medieval burial practices and the internal structure hidden from casual visitors.
