Hensel-Kaserne, Villach

The Hensel-Kaserne is a military facility in Villach with a rectangular layout and high gable roof that follows the slope of the land. The building displays original vaulted ceilings on the ground floor and a rustic entrance portal that form its defining architectural features.

The complex was built in 1860 as part of the Santner estate, which included a mill and sawmill on the land. In 1912 the property was converted into military barracks for the Austrian sapper battalion and has served military purposes ever since.

The name Hensel comes from an earlier phase of use, and today soldiers live and work here as part of their daily routine. The heavy vaulted structures define how the building looks and show how military facilities were designed in this region.

The facility is located at Obere Fellacher Strasse 60-69 in Villach and currently houses the Austrian Army's Pioneer Battalion 1. As a protected monument, the building can be viewed from the outside, though access to the interior is normally not possible for visitors.

The building preserves original Platzlgewoelbe vaulting from the 19th century, a traditional Austrian vaulting technique that was typical in construction at that time. These visible structures show the craftsmanship and building methods used before the site became military property.
