Buruntza, Mountain summit in Gipuzkoa, Spain.

Buruntza is a summit in Gipuzkoa that rises 441 meters, with limestone formations and Monterey pine forests covering its slopes. Multiple marked paths climb toward the peak from Azkorte chapel, which sits at a lower elevation and serves as a common starting point.

During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the summit held military fortifications built by Republican forces to control key communication routes. This conflict left marks on the landscape that visitors can still observe today.

Azkorte hermitage serves as a gathering place where visitors encounter Basque traditions and see how locals connect to their landscape through seasonal celebrations. The site holds meaning as a social hub where community members gather to mark important occasions together.

Multiple routes begin from Azkorte, with clear markings that help visitors navigate the terrain throughout the climb. The exposed ridge areas mean weather can change quickly, so being prepared for changing conditions is helpful.

Archaeological digs on the mountain uncovered an Iron Age settlement showing that people lived here thousands of years ago. Artifacts found at the site provide evidence of farming and herding practices from this early period.
