Castellers de Barcelona, Human tower group in Barcelona, Spain
Castellers de Barcelona is a group that performs traditional human tower constructions in the city, reaching structures with up to nine levels. Members train regularly at a facility in the Clot neighborhood and work closely together to perfect this physically demanding art form.
The group was founded in 1969 and became the first castell team established outside the traditional regions of Catalonia. This founding date marked a turning point for the spread of this ancient Catalan practice beyond its original boundaries.
The group wears red shirts and brings this tradition to Barcelona, where they perform during the La Mercè festival on Plaça Sant Jaume. The ritual of building human towers connects people from different neighborhoods who train and perform together.
The group trains regularly at a facility in the Clot neighborhood as part of a city-wide network of gathering spaces. Visitors can attend their training sessions to watch the techniques and preparation behind these constructions.
In 1998 the group achieved a milestone by completing a four-story nine-level structure with reinforcement, demonstrating advanced technical skill. This breakthrough showed that the city could become a new center for advancing this traditional Catalan art form.
