Peniscola Castle, Medieval castle in Peniscola, Spain
Peniscola Castle is a medieval fortress that rises approximately 64 meters above sea level on a rocky peninsula surrounded by seawater. The structure features carved stone walls and interior rooms connected by barrel-vaulted passages.
The Knights Templar built this fortress in 1294 on earlier Moorish foundations and completed it by 1307. A century later, an antipope transformed the military complex into a residence and library.
The fortress served as a seat of power for successive rulers and today draws visitors who wander its narrow passages and rooms. The peninsula setting creates a sense of separation that reinforces its original purpose as a stronghold.
The site is open to visitors daily, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended as there are steep stairs and uneven floors throughout. The pace of exploration is self-guided and flexible according to your abilities.
A major film production from the 1960s left visible structural additions to the walls that remain today. These modifications became integrated into the fortress and show how cinema influenced the site's architecture.
