La Plana, Agricultural comarca in Castellón province, Spain.
La Plana is a comarca in Castellón province, on the eastern coast of Spain, made up of a flat coastal strip and gently hilly inland terrain. It is divided into two administrative units, La Plana Alta to the north and La Plana Baixa to the south, with Castelló de la Plana as the main city of the area.
The area has been settled since ancient times due to its fertile soil and coastal access, passing through Iberian, Roman, and Moorish rule in turn. After the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, many of today's towns were built on existing settlements and farming was reorganized around new ownership.
La Plana takes its name from the flat coastal plain that defines the land. At the weekly market in Castelló de la Plana, the largest city in the area, locals and visitors can buy oranges, olives, and other regional produce directly from growers.
Castelló de la Plana is a good base for exploring the area, as it is well connected by train and has regular bus lines to surrounding towns. Having a car makes it easier to reach the more rural parts of the comarca, which lie off the main routes.
La Plana is one of Spain's main areas for growing clementines, and a large share of the harvest is exported directly to other European countries. In winter, the fields turn into a sea of orange fruit that stands out across the flat land.
