Reservoir of Ullíbarri-Gamboa, Water reservoir in Álava, Spain
Reservoir of Ullíbarri-Gamboa is a large water storage basin in Álava province, stretching across rolling hills and fed by the Zadorra River system. Forested slopes surround the water, creating several beach areas and sections for boating and walking trails.
Construction of this water storage facility started in the 1950s and finished in the early 1970s to improve regional water supply. The project shaped modern infrastructure in Álava and changed how the Zadorra valley was used.
The reservoir serves as a gathering place for local communities who spend weekends swimming, fishing, and picnicking along its shores. These everyday activities connect residents to the water and mountains that shape life in the Basque country.
The water is accessible at several points, especially at Landa and Garaio beaches where visitors can swim. Marked trails run through the area for walking, and boating and fishing are permitted in certain sections.
Beneath the water surface lie the remains of several former villages that were inhabited before the dam was built. These submerged settlements form a silent record of human settlement now hidden by the water.
