Sanctuaire of San Migel de Aralar, Uharte-Arakil, Romanesque church in Aralar mountain range, Spain

The Sanctuary of San Miguel de Aralar is a Romanesque church located on the Aralar mountain range at approximately 1355 meters elevation. The building features three apses and barrel-vaulted naves that are typical of early medieval construction in northern Spain.

The original structure dated to the 11th century but was destroyed by fire and rebuilt and consecrated in 1098. This reconstruction established the form of the sanctuary that survives today.

The sanctuary is dedicated to Saint Michael and has drawn pilgrims for centuries seeking a place for prayer and reflection. This veneration has shaped the site's identity as a spiritual destination in the mountains.

The sanctuary sits on a mountain and is accessible by foot or car, with the walking approach being part of the visit experience. The best time to visit is during clear weather when views of the surrounding mountains are most rewarding.

The sanctuary preserves ancient iron chains connected to a local legend in which a man named Teodosio de Goñi wore them to seek redemption after an accidental tragedy. These chains remain visible today and tell a story of penance and forgiveness.
