Santa Maria de Gerri

Santa Maria de Gerri is a Romanesque monastery in the Baix Pallars mountain region built with three naves, cross vaults, and side apses. The structure displays typical early medieval features crafted from local stone with austere masonry work.

The monastery was founded in 1101 and experienced transitions between different religious communities across the centuries. Its importance as a center of faith gradually shifted as power in the region changed hands.

The monastery is named for Saint Mary and has shaped the valley's spiritual identity for centuries. Visitors today can enter the place of worship and sense the continuity of medieval devotion.

The location sits in a rural mountain valley and requires time to reach since roads are winding and remote. Visitors should bring weather-appropriate clothing and be prepared for uneven terrain around the grounds.

During the Spanish Civil War in 1936 the original building was destroyed, and what stands today is a carefully rebuilt version. This reconstruction preserves the medieval form while representing a modern chapter in the site's history.
