Fragas do Eume Natural Park, Natural park in A Capela, Spain
Fragas do Eume Natural Park is a protected forest area in northwestern Spain spread across river valleys, filled with old oak, chestnut, and birch trees. The dense growth creates a network of trails and open spaces where a medieval monastery sits hidden among the trees.
The park was officially set aside in 1997 to protect the old forest and river landscape. The Caaveiro Monastery, standing among the trees, goes back more than a thousand years and has witnessed the long story of these woodlands.
The word 'Fraga' comes from the Galician language and means natural forest. Today, locals and visitors call this place by that name because it describes exactly what you see walking through—thick woodlands that have grown here for centuries.
The area is accessible from several different entrances, each leading to different parts of the forest landscape. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and stick to marked trails, especially after rain, since the ground can become slippery.
Despite being close to populated areas, the park has kept a range of wildlife, including rare bird species and frogs that hide in quiet forest corners. These animals are normally hard to spot, but attentive visitors can catch signs of their presence in the woods and along the river banks.
