Mount San Lorenzo, Mountain summit in Sierra de la Demanda, Spain
Mount San Lorenzo is the highest summit in the La Rioja region of northern Spain, part of the Sierra de la Demanda mountain range. It sits at 2,271 meters and its slopes are served by both a ski resort and a network of hiking trails.
During the Middle Ages, the mountain was used as a boundary marker between different territories in this part of the Sistema Ibérico. Its position on the edge of several domains gave it a lasting role in the history of the surrounding area.
The northern slopes of the mountain are crossed by sections of the Camino de Santiago, passing through old villages that have welcomed pilgrims for centuries. Walkers on these paths today still meet other pilgrims making their way through the region.
Trails are generally clear from May through October, making this the easiest window for a hike to the summit. The main starting points are the village of Ezcaray and the Valdezcaray ski resort, both of which give access to different routes up the mountain.
Although the summit is closely associated with La Rioja, part of the mountain actually falls within the province of Burgos, in the Castile and León region. This cross-regional position makes it one of the few peaks in northern Spain that sits on a border between two autonomous communities.
