Jujol Centre – Can Negre, Modernist art center in Sant Joan Despí, Spain.
Jujol Centre - Can Negre is a renovated farmhouse in Sant Joan Despí featuring modernist design from the early 1900s. The distinctive facade displays curved shapes, unusual windows, and a terrace adorned with trencadís mosaic work in a style known as carrossa.
The building began as a 17th-century farmhouse before undergoing a complete transformation between 1915 and 1930 by architect Josep Maria Jujol. The renovation for lawyer Pere Negre i Jover converted it into a modern residence with artistic design principles.
The center operates as a municipal art school where students learn painting and ceramics in its rooms. You can observe their work and feel the creative activity happening within the modernist space.
The center is open Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 1 PM and Monday through Thursday from 5:30 PM to 8 PM. Sunday visits are possible from 12 PM to 2 PM, making it accessible on weekends.
The main facade features five medallions spelling out the Latin phrase 'Ave gratia plena dominus tecum' across its curved upper edge. This religious message is woven discreetly into the building's artistic design and often goes unnoticed by casual visitors.
