The Charterhouse exhibits detailed Gothic architectural elements with ribbed vaults, pointed arches, and stone buttresses across its expansive structure.
Founded in 1475 near the Guadalete River, the monastery commemorates the Battle of Salado from 1368, where the Virgin Mary interceded according to local accounts.
The monastery contains notable Renaissance artworks, including the choir stalls and an altarpiece created by Juan de Oviedo de la Bandera between 1565 and 1625.
The monument requires immediate conservation efforts due to its endangered status, with ongoing archaeological studies and structural improvements taking place.
French invasion in 1810 forced monks to flee to Cádiz, resulting in the loss of Zurbarán paintings now displayed at the Provincial Museum of Cádiz.
