Cinema Museum

The Cinema Museum in Girona presents a large collection of devices, photographs, posters, and films that document the development of image projection. The exhibition shows different technologies from old camera obscura systems to magic lantern apparatus and early film machines.

The museum opened in 1998 as Spain's first cinema museum, built on the Tomas Mallol Collection that the city of Girona acquired in 1994. The collection offers insight into four centuries of visual entertainment and its technological progress.

The museum displays how people created and watched moving images across centuries, from ancient shadow play techniques to early film devices. This variety reflects how deeply the desire to tell stories through images is rooted in different cultures.

The museum is easily accessible and provides enough time to explore the different exhibits thoroughly. Visitors should know that some areas require stairs and it is advisable to check in advance which special opening hours apply on certain days.

Visitors can experiment with working replicas of historical equipment, making abstract history tangible. This hands-on experience allows people to understand firsthand how early projection systems actually functioned.
