Passarel·la de la Ciutat Jardí, Tied-arch footbridge in Lleida, Spain
The Passarel·la de la Ciutat Jardí is a modern pedestrian bridge that crosses the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line in Lleida. It features a distinctive arched design made from fiberglass composite materials and connects two neighborhoods on opposite sides of the tracks.
The bridge was built in 2001 as a pioneering example of an arched structure made from industrial plastic profiles. It demonstrated that such modern composite materials could be used effectively for pedestrian crossings over busy rail lines.
The bridge represents modern Spanish engineering achievement, winning the 2005 international Footbridge Award in the Technology category for medium-span structures.
The bridge is freely accessible daily and provides a direct connection between two separated areas of the city across the rail line. It offers a level, safe walking surface suitable for all visitors including those with mobility needs.
The construction uses special composite materials that prevent electromagnetic interference with the electrified high-speed trains running below. This innovation allowed the bridge to be placed directly above the tracks without disrupting rail operations.
