Castle of Caracena

Castle of Caracena is a medieval fortress featuring two fortified enclosures with round towers positioned along the outer walls. The inner section has a trapezoidal layout and housed various defensive structures.

First documented in 1136, the fortress became the subject of a territorial dispute between the dioceses of Osma and Sigüenza. This conflict reveals how important the stronghold was to both church and secular power in the region.

The fortress once represented local authority and control over the surrounding lands. Today the walls reflect the importance this place held in medieval life and governance.

Visiting requires advance planning through the local municipal office in Soria province, Castile and León. It is wise to contact the authorities beforehand to clarify access conditions and the best times to visit.

Inside the fortress walls stands an ancient water storage system positioned beside one of the main defensive towers. This system shows how residents stored water during sieges and ensured daily supplies.
