Castle of Mora de Rubielos, Medieval castle in Mora de Rubielos, Teruel, Spain.
The castle of Mora de Rubielos is a medieval fortress in the town of Mora de Rubielos, in the province of Teruel, made up of four facades enclosing a central courtyard. Several towers and adjoining rooms make up the complex, which still has its original Gothic windows and defensive walls.
The Hernández de Heredia family began building this fortress in the 14th century, during a period of territorial growth in Aragon. Later building campaigns added to the original structure, giving the complex the Gothic form it has today.
The name of the place comes from the Hernández de Heredia family, who used it as a seat of power. Inside, a Gothic chapel built for private worship is still open to visitors today, giving a sense of how the family lived within these walls.
The fortress is in the center of Mora de Rubielos and easy to reach on foot from the town square. The ground inside is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially when visiting the towers and inner rooms.
Although the fortress looks purely military from the outside, it housed a community of Augustinian monks for several centuries. This religious use left traces in the layout of the building that visitors can still spot during a tour.
