Sant Nicolau de Girona, Romanesque church in Girona, Spain.
Sant Nicolau de Girona is a Romanesque church with a single nave, three-lobed chancel, and an octagonal dome spanning the transept. The walls feature Lombard arches arranged between vertical pilasters in a regular pattern.
The building was constructed in 1135 as a circular chapel and originally served the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants as a funerary space. Structural modifications in the 12th century removed one of its original four apses.
The interior shows signs of its varied past uses as a warehouse and workshop before returning to religious purposes. This layered history remains visible in the building's details and layout today.
The building sits on Santa Llucia Street in central Girona and is easily reached on foot. It hosts art exhibitions regularly and remains open for religious services throughout the year.
The building retains only three of its original four apses, the fourth having been removed during extensive modifications in the 12th century. This asymmetry is one of the most striking features of its floor plan.
