San Miguel Cemetery, Málaga, Heritage cemetery in Centro District, Málaga, Spain.
San Miguel Cemetery is a historic burial site containing numerous mausoleums, sculptures, and tombs displaying neoclassical, modernist, and baroque architectural elements. The landscaped paths guide visitors through different sections of burial grounds.
The site originated from royal decrees of the late 18th century and began operations in the early 19th century. Architect Rafael Mitjana undertook major redesign of the grounds around the middle of the 19th century.
The cemetery displays the social structure of nineteenth-century Málaga through family tombs built by wealthy families as they rose to prominence. The architecture of these burial sites reflects the wealth and status different groups held in the city.
The site is accessed from Plaza del Patrocinio and opens to visitors daily. Guided tours led by University of Malaga students offer deeper insights into the architecture and layout.
A chapel dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary added in 1837 marks the central focal point of the grounds. Religious brotherhoods and sisterhoods built their memorial niches around this sacred space.
