Corral de comedias de Alcalá de Henares, Historic open-air theatre in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
The Corral de Comedias is a Spanish courtyard theatre built with wooden galleries, stone architectural elements, and a central performance space. It accommodates approximately 200 spectators in its original layout.
The theatre was constructed in 1601 and opened in 1602 as an open-air courtyard venue for Spanish comedies. It was covered with a roof in 1785 and later served as a cinema.
The upper level contains the cazuela, a section reserved for women during performances, showing how audiences were separated by gender in Spanish theatre of that era.
The theatre is open most days of the week and offers guided tours as well as regular performances. Visitors should check in advance what shows are scheduled and whether any special access conditions apply.
The original cobblestones from the 17th century still lie in the courtyard, and the stage displays several stone capitals showing handcrafted details from that period. These physical traces let visitors connect directly with the craftsmanship of the early modern era.
