Sierra de la Paramera y Serrota

Sierra de la Paramera y Serrota is a protected mountain range in the Province of Avila composed of three distinct alignments within the Central System. The peaks rise to approximately 2,300 meters, and the protected area spans several municipalities with varied granite and rocky formations throughout.

Medieval texts describe this mountain area as heavily forested and inhabited by bears before extensive deforestation changed the landscape. Over centuries, pastoral activities and human settlement gradually transformed the environment, leaving behind the terrain visible today.

Ancient settlements like Ulaca and Cabeza de Navasangil show this area has been occupied and used by people for thousands of years. Visitors who explore these sites can see how communities shaped and lived within this mountain landscape over time.

This mountain area contains five glacier formations, with Los Hornillos glacier having carved distinctive erosion marks deep into the granite bedrock. These ice age remnants reveal how ancient glacial activity shaped and sculpted the hard rock over millennia.
