Les Sitges de Burjassot, Underground grain storage complex in Burjassot, Spain.
Les Sitges de Burjassot is an underground grain storage complex comprising 41 chambers laid out within a trapezoidal paved courtyard. The site takes advantage of its elevated limestone position to maintain the conditions needed for preserving grain over long periods.
Construction of this storage facility started in 1573 to address grain supply challenges in Valencia. Expansion continued until the early 19th century when additional chambers were completed under King Charles IV.
The silo covers display engraved numbers showing sequence and capacity in cafissos, an old measurement system from the Valencia region. These markings reveal how communities managed grain stocks through practical and organized methods.
Wear sturdy footwear when visiting, as the paved courtyard and surrounding areas can be uneven in places. Arriving early in the day provides better lighting for exploring the site and seeing the details of the silo covers.
A Renaissance cross atop a central column marks the heart of the complex, creating a spiritual focal point amid practical storage chambers. This religious monument stands alongside the Hermitage of Saint Roch, reflecting how religious and functional spaces coexisted here.
