Palace of the Dukes of Lazcano
Palace of the Dukes of Lazcano, Baroque palace in Lazkao, Spain.
The Palace of the Dukes of Lazcano is a baroque building featuring a central courtyard with a fountain surrounded by galleries resting on stone columns. The structure displays symmetrical facades with two towers framing a main entrance that faces the organized interior court space.
Construction took place between 1620 and 1640 under the direction of Maria de Lazcano, wife of Admiral Antonio de Oquendo, replacing an earlier structure on the site. The building arose during a period when the family was consolidating its influence and prominence in the region.
The palace reflects the tastes of Castilian nobility through its symmetrical design with flanking towers and a central entrance. Visitors walking through its courtyards notice how the family arranged their spaces to display their social standing and connections.
The building sits in the historic center of Lazkao in Gipuzkoa province and allows visitors to study its architecture from the outside and sometimes from within. It is advisable to check locally about access conditions, as parts of the property may still be in private use.
The building's facade displays a coat of arms that belonged to the Duke of Infantado, who held the title of Marquis of Valmediano. This heraldic symbol remains a visible reminder of the family's connections to other major Castilian noble houses.
