Sanatori de Terrassa, Tuberculosis sanatorium in Terrassa, Spain
Sanatori de Terrassa is a former tuberculosis hospital in Terrassa with nine floors and multiple wings for medical treatment and residence. The building extends over a large site with treatment rooms, common areas and living spaces for patients and staff.
The complex opened in 1952 in the post-war period when respiratory diseases were widespread in Spain and required specialized facilities. The operation as a clinic ended decades later after new medicines shortened treatment duration.
Patients spent months inside the complex and used leisure rooms like cinema and theater during their treatment. These facilities helped the sick endure long stays and support one another.
The site now houses audiovisual companies and serves as a filming location for film and television productions. Visitors can explore the outdoor areas but should note that many indoor spaces are occupied as production studios.
The architecture follows the pavilion system with separated wings to prevent infection transmission between patient groups. Each section had its own ventilation systems and sun terraces for the air-cure therapy of that era.
