Iesso, Roman archaeological site in Guissona, Spain
Iesso is a Roman archaeological site in Guissona where excavations reveal a planned urban layout with main streets, defense towers, and residential blocks. The exposed sections show organized city design spanning roughly 35 meters (115 feet) in width.
This place was established as one of three Roman cities in western Catalonia and later grew into an important regional center. Its significance increased during the Late Antiquity period, when it took on much of the form visitors see today.
The site museum displays pottery vessels, amphoras, and bronze tools that show how people here carried out daily tasks and crafts. These objects from different periods reveal what mattered to those who lived and worked in this place.
The archaeological park can be explored with audio guides that explain the excavated structures and discoveries from different time periods. Visitors should allow enough time to walk through the different areas at their own pace.
Among the archaeological finds are a gold Aureus coin from Emperor Nero's time and a small bronze statuette of a mounted soldier. These rare objects hint at trade, military presence, and the wealth of those who lived here.
