Arganzuela Bridge, Architectural footbridge in Arganzuela district, Madrid, Spain
The Arganzuela Bridge is a pedestrian footbridge crossing the Manzanares River that stretches roughly 280 meters with two spiral metal structures that meet at the top. It accommodates both walkers and cyclists and features an elevated central point offering views of the river below.
The bridge was completed in 2011 by French architect Dominique Perrault as part of the Madrid Río urban development project. This initiative transformed an area that was previously occupied by the M-30 highway.
This bridge connects multiple neighborhoods in Madrid while providing observation points of the Manzanares River and the historical Bridge of Toledo.
The bridge varies between 5 and 12 meters in width, providing plenty of space for pedestrians and cyclists to pass side by side. Nighttime lighting makes it safe and pleasant to cross after dark.
The two spiral metal structures were created using specialized techniques to curve the steel plates into their distinctive form. This technical approach is uncommon and makes the bridge a noteworthy example of contemporary engineering.
