Peña Unzué

Peña Unzué is a mountain summit in the Sierra de Aláiz range that rises to 990 meters above sea level. The peak displays exposed limestone formations on its eastern face, which shape the appearance of the terrain.

The peak has served as a critical navigation point for local communities over the course of centuries. Travelers relied on this landmark to orient themselves while moving through the Navarre landscape.

The name comes from the Basque language, where local people call the peak Untzueko Haitza. This reflects the strong Basque identity of the Navarre region and how communities have named their surroundings in their own tongue.

From the village of Unzué, marked hiking trails lead toward the summit. The path initially winds through dense scrub before climbing the eastern slopes of the mountain.

The peak maintains a prominence of 179 meters and stands as the lowest summit in the Sierra de Aláiz chain. Despite its modest elevation, it holds a particular geological importance within this mountain range.
