Playa los Bateles, Beach in Conil de la Frontera, Spain.
Playa los Bateles is a broad sandy beach in Conil de la Frontera, a small coastal town on the Costa de la Luz in Cadiz Province. The beach runs along the edge of the town center, framed by low dunes on one side and the open Atlantic on the other.
Conil de la Frontera was for centuries one of the main tuna fishing ports on the Andalusian coast, and the beach was at the heart of that activity. Over the course of the 20th century the town gradually shifted toward tourism, though traces of its fishing past are still visible nearby.
The name Bateles comes from a type of small fishing boat once common along this stretch of coast. Early in the morning, local fishermen still launch their boats directly from the shore, a sight that gives the beach a working, lived-in feel.
The beach is within walking distance of Conil de la Frontera town center, making it easy to reach on foot. During summer, lifeguards and showers are available, but outside the main season services are limited.
The wind that blows almost constantly along this stretch of coast made it one of the most popular spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing in southern Europe long before these sports became mainstream. On a typical afternoon the beach can go from calm to breezy within minutes as the Atlantic wind picks up.
