Parc Fluvial del Besòs, Urban park along Besòs River in Barcelona, Spain.
Parc Fluvial del Besós is an urban park stretching over 115 hectares along 9 kilometers of riverbank, from where the Ripoll River joins to the Mediterranean coast. Paved paths run through the park for walking and cycling, while open grassy areas and planted zones fill the space between the water and the wider surroundings.
In 1995, four municipalities signed an agreement to restore the river area, with substantial European Union funding supporting environmental recovery. This agreement marked a turning point for a riverbank that had been neglected for decades.
The park brings together people from nearby neighborhoods who come to exercise, ride bikes, or spend time outdoors with their families. Open spaces along the river encourage informal gatherings and recreational activities that shape how locals use their waterfront.
The paved paths are easy for walking and cycling, with a monitoring system that provides information about water levels and weather conditions. Checking the forecast before visiting is helpful, especially during rainy seasons when water levels can rise quickly.
The restoration project removed 69 concrete towers and created wetlands that now support around 200 bird species and numerous aquatic animals. These habitats have become an important refuge for wildlife in an otherwise built-up urban area.
