Teatro del Soho, Modern theatre in Málaga, Spain.
Teatro del Soho occupies the building of the former Teatro Alameda on Calle Córdoba, in the Ensanche Heredia neighbourhood of Málaga's Centro district. Its main auditorium seats 896 spectators, and the venue also has a wardrobe area, a bar and a food service zone. The private theatre is owned by the Málaga actor Antonio Banderas.
The site on Calle Córdoba held the Cine Pascualini, opened in 1907 by Emilio Pascual Marcos, destroyed by bombs in the Spanish Civil War; in the 1940s it became the Palacio de Cristal amusement park and in the 1950s the open-air Terraza Alameda cinema. The Alameda theatre opened in the new building on 22 December 1961 with the opera La serva padrona and closed on 31 May 2018. Antonio Banderas announced its lease on 29 September 2017 with an initial investment of two million euros; it reopened as Teatro del Soho on 15 November 2019 with the musical A Chorus Line.
The name Soho comes from the Málaga neighbourhood where the theatre stands, and its programme mixes its own productions with touring shows. Under the Alameda it was a complementary venue for the Festival de Teatro, the Carnaval de Málaga, FANCINE and the Festival de Málaga de Cine Español, staging comedy, drama, ballet, zarzuela and jazz.
The venue sits near Plaza de España and is equipped with wheelchair access for visitors with limited mobility. Visitors can find event information and purchase tickets through the theater's website.
The building has been a cinema, an amusement park called El Palacio de Cristal in the 1940s, an open-air summer cinema and a circus site before becoming a theatre. Its 1907 predecessor, the Cine Pascualini, was destroyed by bombs during the Spanish Civil War.
