San Martín de Albelda, Monastic ruins in Albelda de Iregua, Spain

The remains of San Martín de Albelda monastery stand on the site of a former Muslim fortress called al-Bayadh in La Rioja region.

Sancho Garcés I and Toda Aznárez, Navarre monarchs, established the monastery on January 5, 924 to commemorate the reconquest of Nájera and Viguera.

The monastery's scriptorium created the Codex Albeldensis in 976, containing the first visual representations of Spanish monarchs and Arabic numerals in Western Europe.

The monastery ruins share the location with the current Iglesia de San Martín de Tours, which maintains regular religious services for the local community.

The monastery expanded to house 200 monks by 950 and received Bishop Godescalcus during the first documented pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
