Peña Bajenza

Peña Bajenza, Mountain summit near Islallana, Spain

Peña Bajenza is a 941-meter summit featuring reddish rock formations shaped by natural erosion. The peak overlooks the Iregua River valley and surrounding settlements in the landscape.

Two crosses stand on the summit, having served as focal points for religious gatherings since ancient times. The mountain has long held significance for the surrounding communities in this region.

On May 3rd each year, local families climb to the summit as part of a pilgrimage tradition. This gathering reflects how the mountain remains woven into the community's yearly rhythm and spiritual practices.

Multiple trails lead to the summit from different starting points in the surrounding area. Most visitors should expect a moderate climb that takes between two to three hours depending on the route chosen.

During summer months, griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures nest on the rocky slopes, making it a haven for bird watchers. The steep faces provide these large raptors with protected spaces for breeding.
