Fuente de los Ilustres, Logroño, Bronze fountain at Gran Via intersection, Logroño, Spain.
The Fuente de los Ilustres is a bronze fountain in central Logroño, arranged as a circle of eight life-sized figures around a central basin. Water flows continuously from the center and runs down the back of each figure.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1999, the work of sculptors Dalmati and Alejandro Narvaiza Rubio. It was created to give lasting recognition to people who had shaped the history of La Rioja.
The eight bronze figures represent poets, orators, and thinkers from La Rioja who left a mark on the region over the centuries. Each figure stands in a slightly different pose, and visitors can walk around the basin to look at each one up close.
The fountain stands at the corner of Gran Via and Calle Chile and can be visited at any time of day or night. Walking a full circle around it gives the best view of all eight figures.
Because water runs constantly down the backs of the figures, locals gave the fountain a playful nickname that has nothing to do with its official name. The nickname originated from a letter written to a local newspaper and has been in use ever since.
